Conversations on Diversity

OBJECTIVE: Design informational posters/flyers that sensitively represent the topic of each Diversity Event.

STRATEGY: The Conversations on Diversity and Inclusion series (CODI) focuses on the complexities of group and individual identities and how they influence one another. The gatherings provide a safe space for members of the campus community to consider the often sensitive issues surrounding identity. I decided to approach each poster with the subject of the conversation in mind. Because the subjects of these talks were often very sensitive, I had to choose my symbols and pictures carefully. For example, for the “What’s In A Name?” flyer, I needed to find a way of including many different nationalities and preferences in one discussion. I made a color palette based on the different flags off each Hispanic or Latino country and cross referenced them with the LGBTQ flag. I did a low poly illustration of South America that branched out into individual triangles with the different Hispanic/Latino titles nestled in them. This was meant to show how unity in Hispanic cultures does not mean that individualism for each Hispanic/Latino person is out the window. Culture, gender choices and sexuality all play into individualism which was why my design needed to be inclusive of all of those factors.
